The Golden Gate Bridge

Cost:Approximately $35 million at the time, which is equivalent to about $1.64 billion in 2019 dollars.
Outcome:The bridge successfully connected San Francisco to Marin County across the Golden Gate strait. Upon its opening, its 4,200-foot-long suspension span was the longest in the world. It is a renowned American icon and engineering marvel, celebrated for its distinctive "international orange" color.
The Panama Canal
Year(s) of Construction (US Effort):1904–1914 (A previous French attempt began in the late 1800s but failed due to disease and financial issues).
Cost: The United States spent almost $500 million to finish the project, roughly equivalent to $15.7 billion in 2024 dollars.
Outcome:The canal formally opened on August 15, 1914, providing a practical shipping route between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and symbolizing U.S. technological and economic prowess. The project was a massive engineering feat that fundamentally shifted global maritime trade routes.
The Hubble Space Telescope (HST)
Year of Launch:1990 (Conceived in 1962, but faced several delays).
Cost: At launch, NASA had spent approximately $4.7 billion (adjusted to 2010 dollars). The cumulative costs including all servicing missions are estimated at around $11.3 billion.
Outcome:Despite an initial flaw in its primary mirror (which was corrected during a 1993 servicing mission), the HST has been immensely successful. It has made over a million observations, providing sharp images of planets, stars, and galaxies, and helping scientists determine the age of the universe. It is considered the most expensive science mission in NASA history.
